Rick Whittington


Over the last ten years, Rick Whittington has developed a broad knowledge of how to run an online business. His skills include site design, information architecture, usability, ecommerce, content management, internet marketing and merchandising.

Prior to starting his consulting company, Rick worked at Circuit City and Crutchfield Corporation where he led the web site design team. In these positions, he worked closely with marketing teams, merchandising teams, IT front-end and back-end coding teams, and worked closely with senior management doing strategic planning.

Rick started his career as a web designer at Circuit City and quickly rose to the position of Design Manager. As Design Manager, he helped forge internet advertising relationships with America Online, MSN and Yahoo. He managed a $5 million online media plan and developed a performance tracking system so the media plan could be refined and made more profitable. He also helped launch an affiliate marketing program on the BeFree platform.

Rick also pitched and began an email marketing program at Circuit City, where he worked with various email marketing vendors to test and deploy email campaigns and grow subscriber numbers through web sweepstakes.

Rick brought a usability focus to Circuit City site design, where he first wrote and moderated usability tests and eventually worked with companies like Usability Sciences and Sachs Insights to test and improve site design. He was responsible for design and usability of all website features including cart, checkout, search, navigation and product presentation.

During his last year at Circuit City, Rick was tasked with holding strategic planning sessions to brainstorm new directions for the site and leading creative efforts for the 2004 re-launch of Rick led an interactive agency RFP process and worked with interactive agency R/GA to manage creative aspects of the site relaunch.

At both Circuit City and Crutchfield Corporation, Rick led a creative services team tasks with site maintenance and visual merchandising, email marketing deployment, ad banner production and testing, and search engine optimization.

Under Rick's leadership, won multiple design awards including the Bizrate Circle of Excellence (4 consecutive years), an Internet Retailer Top 50 award, and recognition from customer experience firm Vividence and industry publication Twice Magazine.

Rick attended Virginia Tech where he received a BA with honors in Communication Studies and a Marketing minor.
